Google tests digital watermark to identify AI-generated images

In an effort to combat misinformation, Google is testing a digital watermark that can identify images created using artificial intelligence (AI).
SynthID, a tool created by Google’s AI division DeepMind, will recognize images produced by machines.
Changes are embedded in individual pixels within images in order to make watermarks invisible to the human eye but detectable by computers.
However, DeepMind said it is not “foolproof against extreme image manipulation”.
As technology advances, it is getting harder and harder to distinguish between real images and those that have been artificially created.
AI image generators are now commonplace; with popular tool Midjourney boasting more than 14.5m users.

They make it possible for users to quickly create images by typing in simple text instructions, raising concerns about ownership and copyright around the world.
The system for creating and verifying watermarks that Google uses only applies to images made with its own image generator, Imagen.
