UN Human Rights office supports Hermoso’s stance over Rubiales kiss

UN

Jenni Hermoso has received support from the UN Human Rights office after being kissed by Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation.

Everyone has a duty to “call out and challenge” sexual harassment and abuse, according to the UN organization.

Rubiales vehemently disputes Hermoso’s claim that the kiss on her lips following Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup final was not consenting.

Despite receiving criticism for his actions, Rubiales has resisted calling it quits.

Even though the world football governing body Fifa has temporarily barred him from all football-related activities for 90 days, he has maintained that stance.

“Women in sport continue to face sexual harassment and abuse – every one of us has the responsibility to call out and challenge such abuse,” the UN body stated on X, formerly Twitter.

“We join Spain’s Jenni Hermoso and all those working to end abuse and sexism in sport. Make this a turning point.”

The message was published using the UNHR’s official account, which has four million followers. The hashtag #SeAcabo, which means “It’s over” and has been frequently used by Hermoso supporters, is also included in the post along with the X handle of UN human rights commissioner Volker Turk.

Spanish prosecutors have started a preliminary investigation to determine whether the incident qualifies as a sexual assault crime.
