NPP’s Super Delegates Congress kicks off nationwide

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun voting across the country in its Super Delegates Congress, as it embarks on the mission to narrow down the list of aspirants from 10 to 5 in preparation for the party’s forthcoming congress in November of this year.

The list of 10 aspirants includes influential figures within the party and beyond:

  1. Alan Kyerematen – Former Trade Minister
  2. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto – Former Agriculture Minister
  3. Kennedy Agyapong – Member of Parliament for Assin Central
  4. Joe Ghartey – Former Railways Minister
  5. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong – Former party General Secretary
  6. Kwadwo Poku – Energy expert
  7. Boakye Agyarko – Former Energy Minister
  8. Kofi Konadu Apraku – Former Trade Minister
  9. Francis Addai Nimoh – Former Member of Parliament for Mampong
  10. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – Vice President

The nationwide election has engaged approximately 900 delegates who will participate in the process.

The five contenders who secure the highest number of votes will advance to the party’s primaries scheduled for November. There, they will vie for the coveted role of becoming the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2024 general election.

With the NPP currently holding power in Ghana, the winner of these primaries is anticipated to emerge as a formidable contender to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is constitutionally ineligible for a third term.

As the NPP’s Super Delegates Congress unfolds, the competition is expected to be intense, with prominent candidates such as Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerging as front-runners.

Notably, Kennedy Agyapong’s recent surge in popularity adds an element of unpredictability to the race, potentially positioning him as a surprise contender.

This impending election serves as a critical assessment of the NPP’s unity and resonance among a diverse range of voters. The party’s decision to select a candidate who can unify their ranks while appealing to a broad spectrum of voters remains critical for the party’s fortunes in the upcoming 2024 general election.
