Minority encounters Police before BoG protest

Minority

The Parliamentary Minority has announced that it has come to an agreement with the police regarding the procedures for its planned protest at the Bank of Ghana’s Headquarters on September 5, 2023.

Expressing concerns over what they perceive as mismanagement of the central bank and the substantial GHC60 billion losses reported in the 2022 financial statement, the Minority issued a 21-day ultimatum to Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and his deputies, demanding their resignation.

After a private meeting with the police at the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Deputy Minority Leader, informed the media that all necessary preparations have been finalized for the upcoming demonstration addressing the Bank of Ghana’s management.

Scheduled to occur at the Bank of Ghana’s main office, the protest aims to articulate the Minority’s concerns about what they perceive as mishandling of financial resources and the ensuing economic repercussions.

Bernard Monarh, a prominent member of the advocacy group AriseGhana, who participated in the police meeting alongside the Minority, criticized Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, for justifying the construction of the new central bank headquarters.

In a previous interview with the police, Monarh also expressed apprehension about the Bank’s printing of money in the years 2021 and 2022, which the group attributed to negligence and corruption.

Monarh stated, “We hold the view that the illegal printing of money by BoG in the year 2021 and 2022 to the tune of GH¢77 billion to finance the recklessness of the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government, in flagrant disregard of section 30 of the BOG Act (as amended) is the height of irresponsibility and must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians.”
