Niger Coup: Ecowas dismisses Junta’s three-year transition plan
The announcement by the leader of the coup in Niger that civilian rule cannot be restored for three years has been rejected by the West African regional grouping, Ecowas, as a negotiating ploy.
Abdel-Fatau Musa, the political commissioner for the organization, deemed the timeline unacceptable.
A national dialogue, according to Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, is necessary to lay the groundwork for a new political system in Niger.
To reinstate the deposed president, Ecowas has threatened military action.
Again, large crowds gathered in Niamey, the nation’s capital, to support the coup.
However, according to correspondents, some opponents of the military coup are reluctant to publicly voice their opinions.
