Dominican Republic: Explosion kills at least 11, including a baby
An explosion that occurred on Monday in the Dominican Republic’s small town of San Cristóbal resulted in at least 11 fatalities.
Officials claimed to have located the remains of 10 adults and a baby who was four months old, but they cautioned that “there are more corpses” likely to be discovered.
The explosion in the town’s commercial district’s origin is still unknown.
The town was covered in smoke for several hours following the explosion and the fires it started.
Ten individuals remain unaccounted for.
President Luis Abinader visited the explosion site on Tuesday and declared, “We are doing all that is humanly possible to locate them”
Dozens of people were injured and many remain in hospital.
In four of the nine burning buildings, hundreds of firefighters are still working to douse the flames.
On Monday afternoon, the town, which is on the southern outskirts of the capital Santo Domingo, was completely destroyed by the explosion.
There is currently no known source for it. Among the structures that were destroyed were a plastics factory, a veterinary clinic, and a hardware store.
