Niger Coup: Junta recalls its ambassador to Ivory Coast
The leaders of the coup in Niger have recalled their country’s ambassador to Ivory Coast after claims that the Ivorian president’s remarks amounted to “praising armed action” against them.
On his way back from a regional summit last week, Alassane Ouattara expressed his determination to see the democratically elected leader of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, restored to office.
Additionally, he had stated that a military operation to reestablish democracy in Niger should begin “as soon as possible”.
Along with Nigeria and Benin, he stated that Ivory Coast would provide between 850 and 1,100 troops.
The West African regional bloc Ecowas has reiterated that it prefers a diplomatic solution but notes that military intervention is still an option.
The bloc claimed it was shocked that Mr. Bazoum would be charged with high treason by the coup leaders.
