NPP – Disregard the NDC’s request for the resignation of the BoG Governor

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) demand for the resignation of the Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his deputies has been criticized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NPP believes that the NDC’s call reflects their lack of solutions to contribute to economic stability.

On August 8, the NDC issued a threat to march to the Bank of Ghana’s premises within 21 days to remove Dr. Addison and his deputies from their positions if they do not voluntarily resign. The NDC’s basis for this demand is what they consider to be irresponsible management of the bank by its officials.

Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s Director of Communications, stated to Citi News that the public should not pay attention to the NDC’s propaganda.

He questioned whether the NDC intends to control the Bank of Ghana, suggesting that the NDC’s actions are a distraction and a sign of their lack of a clear message. He emphasized that the focus should be on strengthening the ongoing economic recovery and outlining a path for sustainable growth.

Ahiagbah also pointed out that the 60 billion Ghana cedi losses incurred by the Bank of Ghana in 2022 are not unique to Ghana; other central banks around the world are facing similar losses. He cited examples such as the Bank of England and Swiss bank, which are also dealing with outstanding debts on their books due to global challenges like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
