A US nurse Alix Dorsainvil and her daughter have been freed, after being abducted in Haiti, according to her employer.

“It is with a heart of gratitude and immense joy that we at El Roi Haiti confirm the safe release of our staff member and friend, Alix Dorsainvil and her child who were held hostage in Port au Prince, Haiti. Today we are praising God for answered prayer,” the statement said.

The organization requested that no one get in touch with Dorsainvil or her family, “there is still much to process and to heal from in this situation,” the statement said.

Dorsainvil and her daughter were kidnapped from the community ministry, El Roi Haiti, where she works in Port-Au-Prince.

Gangs in the city frequently target local communities in kidnapping operations for ransom payments.

Although locals are the vast majority of victims, foreigners have occasionally been taken in the past. In 2021, a local gang kidnapped 17 missionaries from the United States and Canada who were on their way north of the capital and held them for more than a month.

According to a UN report, there were 1,014 kidnappings reported by authorities in Haiti from January to June of this year, including 256 women, 13 girls, and 24 boys.

On July 28, the day Dorsainvil and her daughter were kidnapped, the US State Department expressed concerns about the security situation in the country and ordered all non-emergency government personnel to leave Haiti.

In footage from an undated source on the organization’s website, Dorsainvil, a health worker from New Hampshire, claimed that she moved to Haiti after her husband asked her to provide nursing care for the children at a Haitian school.

According to a newsletter from Sandro Dorsainvil’s former school, Lustre Christian High School in Montana, the couple wed in Haiti in January 2021.
