Ofori-Atta says the recent demands for his removal were valid within the context of the nation’s democracy

Ken Ofori-Atta, the Finance Minister, has acknowledged the legitimacy of recent calls for his removal, affirming that such demands align with the principles of the country’s democracy.

Mr. Ofori-Atta highlighted that, as a public servant, individuals possess the right to voice their concerns regarding his tenure.

In the year 2022, the Finance Minister encountered criticism, as certain legislators from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) advocated for his dismissal, attributing the nation’s economic difficulties to his leadership.

Furthermore, the National Democratic Congress(NDC) initiated a censure motion to expel him from his position, citing reasons such as significant incompetence and potential conflicts of interest.

During the vote to determine his removal, the Majority group staged a departure from the proceedings.

During an interview with GTV, Ken Ofori-Atta underscored the importance of individuals being able to express their opinions.

“In the period of censure, in which Parliament then voted against it, but more importantly, you were in a situation where you were battered and broken. [But] you do not leave a ship at that time. And given the urgency of ensuring the IMF programme goes through, for me, it was a duty to serve, and there was no running away from it,” explained the Finance Minister.
