Former President of Ivory Coast dies at age 89
Henri Konan Bédié, the former leader of Ivory Coast, passed away.
He was 89.
After Félix Houphout-Boigny’s passing in 1993, Mr. Bédié became the country’s second head of state.
But he was overthrown in a military coup in 1999 as a result of widespread corruption allegations and a downturn in the economy.
He was chosen to study in France where he earned a doctorate in economics despite being chosen to study there despite being born into a relatively poor family.
Three years ago, he made an attempt to regain control of the country, but President Alassane Ouattara, a longtime political foe, defeated him.
It is unknown what caused Mr. Bédié’s death.
His passing will be regarded as a significant loss for the entire nation.
Despite his rivalry with President Ouattara, he was generally regarded as a wise man who always cherished peace and a supporter of national unity.
Social media is being used by many Ivorians to honor him.
