A constable belonging to India’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) has been taken into custody after fatally shooting four individuals on a train near Mumbai.

According to the police, the accused, Chetan Kumar, targeted and killed a senior RPF official and three passengers. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the shooting and to identify the deceased passengers.

The RPF is responsible for safeguarding railway passengers and property in India.

The incident occurred around 5:30 local time (3:00 GMT) on a train en route from Jaipur in Rajasthan to Mumbai city in Maharashtra.

Chetan Kumar initially shot Tikaram Meena, an assistant sub-inspector with the RPF, and subsequently targeted three other passengers, as stated in an RPF statement.

Following the shooting, Mr. Kumar activated the in-house alarm chain, which is used to halt trains during emergencies, and attempted to flee. He was later arrested on the outskirts of Mumbai.

A senior official from the Western Railways stated that there appeared to be no altercation between Mr. Kumar and others prior to the shooting. The official added, “It seems like he was not well.”
