Speaker Bagbin establishes special committee to probe leaked tape plotting IGP’s removal

A seven-member special committee has been established by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to look into claims made on a leaked audio containing alleged plans that the government intended to remove the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, in order to rig the 2024 elections.

The committee is headed by Samuel Atta-Akyea, a member of parliament of Abuakwa South, and it has Dr. Isaac Lartey Annan, a lawyer and human rights specialist, as a technical member.

Making this known in parliament in Accra on Tuesday, Bagbin said “The special committee will be chaired by Hon. Atta Akyea and with him from the majority side are Hon. Yaw Boamah and Hon. Ophelia Mensah. And the minority side, we have the Vice Chair, Hon. James Agalga, and with him are Hon. Eric Opoku and Hon. Peter Toobu.”

“The technical person is a lawyer, a human rights expert in the name of Dr Isaac Lartey Annang. He will be the serving person to anchor the investigations of the committee. The clerk will definitely be there to support the work of the committee.”

The committee’s task is to look into both the veracity of the tape’s allegations and its leak as well.

Additionally, the committee has been tasked by Speaker Bagbin with formulating suggestions on how to stop similar incidents from happening in the future.

The committee was urged by the Speaker of the House to deliver its report by September 10, 2023.
