Leaked tape controversy: ‘We’re only asking for investigations, why are you worried?’ -Minority to NPP

Eric Opoku, the National Democratic Congress’ Member of Parliament for Asunafo South and the Minority, is urging the majority caucus in parliament to back the demand for investigations into the alleged plot to oust Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Inspector General of Police (IGP), from his position.

A supposedly secret audio recording detailing an alleged plot to replace the IGP before the 2024 elections surfaced on Tuesday, July 11.

The recording was purportedly made by high-ranking members of the governing party and a senior officer of the Ghana Police Service.

The suggestion by some is that, this is allegedly a plan by the ruling party to rig the 2024 election.

Mr Opoku claims that this is a matter of concern for national security, so the house (parliament) must unanimously approve a probe into the matter.

Even though the government has denied any such plan to unseat the IGP and rig the election through Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, this still stands.

In contrast, Mr. Eric Opoku stated during a speech on the House Floor that “We are only asking for investigations so that we can expose and know the people behind it.

“Why are you worried if you’re not the one responsible?”, he questioned.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, has urged the Interior Minister to look into the situation, and he made the remark in support of Kofi-Buah.

However, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader, asserts that the NDC cannot hold the NPP accountable for any attempt to rig the election until the authenticity of the tape can no longer be confirmed.

Mr. Opoku retorted, “Assist us, agree that we investigate this matter; it’s just investigations and you want to impede it,” in response to Mr. Afenyo-Markin.
