Nigeria: President Tinubu aims to ease frustration over rising fuel prices

In an effort to mitigate the effects of rising fuel prices brought on by the new president’s decision to end the petrol subsidy, the Nigerian government says it will begin distributing grains and fertilizer as of next week.

The price of food, transportation, and other services has also increased.

The government is also taking proposals to increase salaries in the civil service under consideration.

The rising cost of living is causing growing frustration. After almost two months in office, President Bola Tinubu wants to be seen as handling the crisis.

His administration wants to provide cash assistance to low-income families along with other measures, but first it needs to make a new list of those who qualify for the program.

In an effort to lower transportation costs, there are plans to use both compressed natural gas and electric vehicles, including buses and cars.

The elimination of the fuel subsidy without accompanying price-reduction measures has drawn criticism from labour unions.

The government and the unions reached an agreement last month on an eight-week timeline for raising the minimum wage for government employees.
