High Court to rule on Gyakye Quayson’s stay of proceedings application on Tuesday
The Accra High Court is scheduled to deliver a ruling on Tuesday, July 11 regarding the application for a stay of proceedings in the case involving James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North. Quayson is facing charges of forgery and perjury.
The legal team representing the MP has requested the court to halt the proceedings in order to allow the Court of Appeal to review the decision made by the trial judge to conduct the case on a day-to-day basis. Tsatsu Tsikata, the lead counsel for Quayson, argued that proceeding with the trial would pre-judge the pending appeal.
However, the prosecution, led by Godfred Dame, opposed the application. The Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, argued before the Accra High Court that the application filed by Tsatsu Tsikata contained irrelevant matters, distorted facts, and caused confusion.
The Attorney-General further stated that the application did not present any exceptional circumstances that would justify halting the criminal trial. Instead, he believed that the application was simply an attempt to obstruct the proceedings against the Assin North MP.
