Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed his desire to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections, emphasizing the sacrifices he has made for the party.

During a campaign speech in the Suame constituency of the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted his dedication to the NPP, particularly recalling his pivotal role as a witness in the party’s 2012 general election petition at the Supreme Court. He mentioned that while others made excuses and hesitated, he willingly risked his political career to support the party.

Dr. Bawumia stated, “When the party needed a witness for the 2012 general election petition, many members gave excuses and were reluctant to put their political careers on the line. However, I stood my ground and sacrificed my political future for the party’s sake.” He further emphasized that his commitment and selflessness make him the ideal candidate to lead the NPP.

In his bid to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 polls, Dr. Bawumia faces competition from nine other candidates who recently underwent vetting.

These candidates include former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Offinso North MP Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, Kojo Opoku, and former Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh.
