Paul Kagame, the president of Rwanda, has urged swift action to address problems plaguing the country’s football, such as the existence of witchcraft.
Tuesday’s televised “Ask the President” session with the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA) featured President Kagame claiming that some people, particularly coaches, engaged in unethical activities like witchcraft.
“Instead of adequate training, you find them engaging in witchcraft or bribery, which is the first thing that needs to be addressed,” he said.
The country’s teams have had difficulty finding success despite significant investment in the sports industry.
The only time Rwanda’s national football team has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations was in 2004, and they are currently last in their qualifying group without a victory.
Mr. Kagame is a well-known football fan who supports the English team Arsenal. Since 2018, the club has had a contentious sponsorship agreement with Rwanda’s Tourism Authority worth £30 million ($42 million).
