U-23 AFCON – Ibrahim Tanko laments lack of quality after black meteors exit

Black Meteors

Ibrahim Tanko, the coach of the Black Meteors, expressed his disappointment following his team’s failure to advance to the semi-finals of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Despite starting the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Congo, Ghana suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Morocco and settled for a 1-1 draw with Guinea.

These outcomes proved detrimental as Ghana (Black Meteors) crashed out in the group stage, falling short of their goal to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris next year.

In the aftermath of Friday’s result, Tanko openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the overall performance of the Black Meteors. He acknowledged that Ghana did not possess the same level of quality as some of the tournament’s strongest teams.

Tanko stated, “Yes, everyone witnessed it. Undoubtedly, we are not the best in this tournament in terms of quality, but as a country, we are certainly working hard.” He further added, “The FA is making efforts to implement changes, but we definitely need to do more, as you mentioned. When you compare our performance against Egypt (pre-tournament friendly) and today, it is evident that we need to catch up; otherwise, it will be too late.”

Ghana conceded a total of eight goals while scoring five, finishing third in Group A behind Morocco and Guinea, who have progressed to the final four and now have an opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games.
