Petroleum tanker drivers suspends nationwide strike

Amoako-Attah

Following a crucial meeting with the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) Tanker Drivers have decided to suspend their industrial action.

The strike had been initiated on Monday due to concerns about the poor road network around their loading terminals.

The union’s vice chairman, Sunday Alabi, stated that the strike suspension would take effect from midnight on Thursday, June 29, 2023. This decision was made on the condition that the contractor responsible for the road improvement ensures that the riding quality is enhanced within three weeks.

Works on the access roads to the depots in Kumasi, Takoradi, and Bupe are scheduled to commence the following day, and a seven-member committee will be formed to monitor the progress. The committee will consist of three members from the ministry and four members from the union.

Minister Amoako-Attah emphasized the formation of a joint committee between the ministry and the union to address their concerns promptly. He assured the drivers that either he or his deputy would visit once a week to inspect the road improvement progress. He urged collaboration and patience, emphasizing that resolving the problem required collective efforts.

“We all have a stake in this country. We have identified a problem, and we must work together to resolve it. Let’s exercise patience and address it in the right way,” stated Minister Amoako-Attah.
