Thailand: Student killed by exploding extinguisher during fire drill
An extinguisher exploded during a fire drill at a senior high school in Thailand killing one student.
Bangkok’s governor reported that 21 additional people at Rajavinit Mathayom School were injured in Friday’s incident. Seven were brought to the hospital.
The victim was about 10 meters away when the explosion sent the extinguisher flying in his direction.
Rescuers claimed that exposure to the sun or heat may have caused the extinguisher to become defective.
The deceased student was a senior in high school. His age has not been verified.
Police have cordoned off the scene, which is still littered with debris, and have been looking into what caused the incident on Friday.
The extinguishers used in the drill have all been delivered to the police’s forensics division, according to the officials.
According to the rescue organization on the scene, the canister that exploded contained carbon dioxide.
When they run out of chemicals, the extinguishers are typically refilled with new ones, but the city’s police chief said “how and where they were refilled must be investigated, and safety valves must be checked”.
According to permanent secretary Atthaphon Sangkhawasee, representatives from the Ministry of Education have also been sent to the school to investigate what occurred.
He offered his condolences to the family members of the deceased student and added that the ministry would help and compensate those impacted.
