” The Away Goal Rule Should Be Scrapped From CAF Competiton” – Bernard Morrison

Bernard Morrison, a forward for Tanzanian Premier League Club Young Africans has suggested that the away goal rule in CAF Competitions needs to be scrapped for fairness’ sake.

Bernard Morrison played in the final season’s CAF Confederation Cup and lost the trophy on this same away goal rule against USM Alger even though both legs ended up in a 2-all draw.

In an interview on Spice 91.9 FM in the Western Region, Bernard Morrison reiterated that the away goal rule is unfair since it gives teams a huge boost just by virtue of scoring more goals away from home.

He said it should take more than just scoring more goals away from home to advance a team to the next round of the important African games. The away goal rule discourages a team that loses at home because there are so many variables in football.

To him, it makes the prestigious African competitions less competitive.

“A team can score more goals away and lose the return fixture. They may not deserve to qualify for the next stage but because of the goals they scored away, they will progress. For me, there is no balance. It’s somewhat of a 12th man for the team and not 11 vs 11. The away goal rule should be scrapped,” He said.

The former Orlando Pirate and Ashgold attacker is now considering whether to continue with Young Africans or not as his contract with the latter is currently over.
