An octagonal sword from more than 3,000 years ago was discovered by archaeologists at a burial site in the southern German state of Bavaria.

The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments released a statement saying that the sword is so well preserved that it still shines.

Researchers believe it was placed in the grave as a burial gift after it was found last week at a site in Donau-Ries.

The sword is believed to date to the Middle Bronze Age towards the end of the century BCE. The statement claims that a sword with an entirely bronze octagonal handle is a rare discovery.

Professor Mathias Pfeil, Director of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, stated that “the sword and the burial still have to be examined so that our archaeologists can classify this excavation more precisely.”

“The state of preservation is exceptional! A find like this is very rare,” he continued.

The sword was a real weapon, according to researchers. According to the statement, “the center of gravity in the front part of the blade indicates that it was balanced mainly for slashing.”

The statement goes on to say that it was left in a grave that included the bones of three people: a man, a woman, and a young person who were all interred close together.

They were interred with a wide variety of grave goods, but it is unclear what their relationship was.
