Four remanded

Four suspects have been remanded by the Tema District Magistrate Court on murder charges in connection with the assassination of Mrs. Josephine Asante, the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Tema Port.

The accused individuals are Frederick Owusu Oppong, known as Kojo Owusu, Richard Kwabena Kwakye, also known as Kwabena Boateng, Dominic Owusu, and Christian Adjei, who was the houseboy of the deceased.

During the court proceedings presided over by Ms. Benedicta Antwi, the attorneys for two of the accused persons informed the court about a bail application they had filed at the High Court. However, the court remanded them for two weeks, awaiting further developments in the case.

The suspects face charges of murder under section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29), as well as two charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, in violation of sections 23 (1) and 40 of the same Act.

The tragic incident unfolded on January 13, 2019, when Mrs. Josephine Asante was found dead in her bedroom upon returning home from a senior staff party. She resided in the EMEFS Estates neighborhood in Afienya, located in the Ningo-Prampram District.

Initially, Christian Adjei, the houseboy, and Amos Apeku, the personal driver of the deceased, were taken into custody during the investigation and brought before the court for preliminary hearings. However, based on recommendations from the Attorney-General’s Department and following various judicial procedures, the court released both individuals from custody on January 26, 2023.

Subsequently, officials from the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Cold Case Unit re-arrested Christian Adjei and Amos Apeku to aid in further investigations.

The re-arrest of the two individuals indicates ongoing efforts to gather more evidence and bring all responsible parties to justice. The case has garnered significant attention due to the prominence of the victim and the seriousness of the charges against the suspects.

As the investigation progresses, it is expected that the court proceedings will continue to ensure a thorough examination of the evidence and the fair application of the law. The remand of the four suspects reflects the commitment to ensuring a just and impartial legal process in the pursuit of truth and justice for the late Mrs. Josephine Asante.
