Ford and Tesla work together to provide customers with access to EV Superchargers
The CEOs of both Ford and Tesla assert that Ford electric vehicle owners will soon have access to Tesla’s extensive electric vehicle (EV) charging network.
Ford EV owners in the United States will be able to use Tesla’s 12,000 Supercharger stations — the brand name for its fast charging stations — through the Ford mobile app starting next year.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, and Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, jointly announced the partnership on a Thursday Twitter Spaces livestream.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ford as a company, and it makes great vehicles. This is something we’re super happy to support,” Musk said during the livestream.
The so-called CCS chargers used by the majority of other EV manufacturers, such as General Motors, Audi, and Rivian, will be replaced by Tesla-style charging ports in Ford’s upcoming EVs, according to Farley.
In the United States, Tesla has more charging stations than CCS.
“We don’t have as many EV customers as you do, but we still have plenty, and for them to be able to have this benefit early next year already and not have to buy a new car is, I think, a real statement by you and the Tesla team to be really prioritizing the customer’s experiences,” Farley told Musk.
To use Tesla’s Superchargers, existing Ford electric vehicles will need to use an adapter.
While many US states push for the adoption of electric vehicles, some detractors have noted that long stretches of highways lack the charging infrastructure to make the cars a practical choice for many Americans.
The situation is becoming more urgent as legislation to limit the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035 has been passed in several states, including California and New York.
Musk invited other EV manufacturers to use Tesla charging ports when creating their vehicles in November.
Musk’s offer was accepted by Ford as the first significant automaker.
