Deputy Education Minister vexed over History textbook denigrating Christianity

John Ntim Fordjour, the deputy education minister, is not happy with the content of the contentious history textbook written by Excellence Publications because it disparaged Christianity in Ghana.

He characterized the book’s substance as abhorrent and misguided.

The text “History of Ghana for Basic Schools – Learners’ Book Four” had a disparaging portrayal of Christendom. This infuriated a lot of people in Ghana, and many of them condemned the textbook on social media.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) later asked the Publishers to remove the textbook from sale right away.

The published book’s content, according to NaCCA’s statement, does not fully reflect the curriculum that has been authorized.

Ntim Fordjour, who is also the member of parliament for Assin South, praised NaCCA for acting quickly to recall the books in a tweet and demanded the imposition of penalties.

“I condemn entirely the rather obnoxious content found in a textbook published by `Excellence Publications’ and smuggled into the market for unsuspecting learners. The content is appalling and misconceived. I support NaCCA’s swift action to recall the books and apply sanctions. Ghana is most peaceful for a reason, and the important place of religion cannot be undermined,” the Deputy Education Minister tweeted.
