A 95-year-old woman, Clare Nowland, who was tasered by police at a care home in Australia, has died.

The incident, which sparked public outrage, occurred when police responded to reports of Mrs. Nowland wandering around the home with a steak knife.

The New South Wales Police (NSW) announced her death, stating that she was surrounded by family and loved ones.

The 33-year-old senior constable who deployed the taser has been charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault, and will appear in court in July.

He is currently suspended from duty with pay as investigations continue.

Mrs. Nowland resided in a care home in Cooma, located south of Australia’s capital city, Canberra.

NSW Police expressed condolences and acknowledged Mrs. Nowland’s life, characterized by family, kindness, and community.

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with those who were lucky enough to know, love, and be loved by Mrs Nowland during a life she led hallmarked by family, kindness and community”, NSW Police said.

The incident resulted in Mrs. Nowland suffering a fractured skull and a serious brain bleed after falling and hitting her head.

Her family described her as a well-respected and much-loved member of the community and the loving matriarch of their family.
