Former Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Public Relations Officer George Quaye has disclosed that some members of the gospel music scene are going to great efforts to influence the Academy and Board Members of the awards.

According to Quaye, these “gospel people” are attempting to sway voting and nominations in favor of their favourite musicians, and are even engaging in unethical behavior.

He was disappointed by their actions, claiming that they undercut the legitimacy of the awards and the hard work of other deserving musicians.

“‘Gospel people’ going round DESPERATELY doing all they can to ‘INFLUENCE ‘ VGMA Academy and Board Members.
‘Worldly’ acts are focusing on their fans as should be done! When we talk p3, then Gospel people bore! Smh,” he wrote on Facebook

The VGMA is one of Ghana’s largest music awards shows and is well-known in the industry.

The Academy and Board Members in charge of nominations and voting are made up of music professionals and industry specialists who are expected to make neutral and unbiased decisions.

In each category, the VGMA Academy has 30% of the vote rights, while the Board has 40%. The general public, on the other hand, has been given an additional 30%.

However, Quaye’s statement implies that some members of the gospel music community are attempting to undermine the awards’ integrity by using deceptive tactics to sway votes in their favor.

This has obviously alarmed followers on social media, who have questioned the awards’ credibility and challenged him to reveal the dishonest individuals.

Quaye, who did not back down from his claims after posting them online yesterday, May 2, 2023, issued another statement to warn everyone that unethical behavior has no place in the music industry.

“Inspire your fans to vote!” Attempt to persuade them! Prod them! Beg! Beseech them! Purchase credits for them! Get them some information! Sing for them if necessary!
If necessary, go from house to house! Just let the Board and Academy do their jobs!!!” He pounded

It will be fascinating to watch what efforts are done to prevent this type of behavior from occurring as the VGMA prepares for its next awards presentation this Saturday.

The VGMA will be televised live on TV3 from the Accra International Conference Center’s Grand Arena on May 6.
