W/R: Police Arrest Persons Involved In Rampage At Golden Star Wassa Mine

About 70 persons have been arrested following Friday morning disturbances between illegal miners and workers of Golden Star Wassa Mine at Benso in the Western Region.

Speaking to Beach Newsroom, the Assembly Member of Benso Electoral Area, Mr Justine Frank Afful on the incident, confirmed that the rampage started around 10 am in the morning when some galamseyers rushed to the premises of Golden Star Wassa Mine.

He reveals that trucks, excavators, car tires, and other properties running into millions of Ghana cedis have been destroyed by illegal miners when they evaded the premises of the company.

According to him, the galamseyers continue working in an old mining pit that belongs to Golden Star Mines even though the company has been warning them to stay off the site.

Mr Afful believes the involvement of security personnel to stop the illegal miners from working in the old mine brought about the mayhem.

Mr Afful narrated that it took the intervention of Police personnel from the Western and Central Regions to restore calm in the area.

He confirmed that one illegal miner has sadly lost his life as a result of the uproar.

The Assembly member revealed that the company employs over 400 Hundred indigenes in the community.
