Shutdown Of Non-Performing Schools Is A Violation Of The GES Act – GNAT

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah says, a comment made by Dr Yaw Osei Adu-Twum about the closure of Senior, Technical and Vocational institutions for poor performance is a violation of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Act.

He says, such an issue must be addressed by the Ghana Education Service and reported to the Ministry and not the other way around.

” The issues the Minister was talking about directly belong to the Ghana Education Service Council. In the education service, we deal with what we call a 6-year management system where each level has its role and responsibility.

For example, the Ministry has been assigned the policy function of providing resources and among other things. The Ghana Education Service has its key role. Let us now take the issues one by one,”

“Issues about the Senior High School should be given to the GES Council. So if there is anything wrong with it then the GES Council must bring the same to the attention of the Minister.”

He attributed the school’s poor performance to insufficient resources and delays in government subventions.

Mr Musah urged the Ministry to put structures in place to ensure the smooth running of the Senior, Technical and Vocational Schools to improve performance.
