VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day, a day widely celebrated by people across the world with the intent of gift reciprocity in order to build relationships and send signals of love. Valentine’s Day today has been designated as a couples’ only holiday, sidelining single people.

 “I’m not celebrating Valentine’s Day because I don’t have a boyfriend”, a statement commonly uttered by  single people and also “Valentine is coming, where is your boyfriend?”, another mocking statement to single people, but as it turns out, valentine’s day is not an exclusive couples’ only holiday as single people can also celebrate their  self-love.

It should be holiday celebrated by all and a holiday for all types of love. But is love and gifts giving the only true intent of this day? Ignorance about concept of a particular holiday and blindly joining in the celebration could have its downsides.

Most people today have blindly accepted Valentine’s Day without fully understanding its concept. In this 21st century, we just partake in this day in the view that it seems harmless because after all, how does love and romance harm people. Most people know that Valentine’s Day is a day to be celebrated but not everyone really knows the reason as to which it is celebrated or why it is even called valentine’s day. What really led to this popular day that has come to be celebrated across all countries and among various cultures and what are the downsides to it?
