WHAT IF ENO BARONY WAS A MAN?

Eno Barony

Eno Barony is currently one of the finest rappers in our country and arguably one of the top six female rappers in Africa. Her originality, storytelling, melody, and flow are unique and outstanding for a female rapper, given that the rap terrain is quite foreign for African female artists.

But even in a male-dominated scene, she kills it. This begs the question; how different would her appeal and success be if she was a man?
In a male-dominated genre, the voice of a female sounds foreign and unwelcome in this country. Many female rappers who are better than some of our popular artists have an almost impossible time making an impact with rap.

Men generally have it easy with some rappers being considered greats with their 2 by 4 primary school rhyme schemes which I am sure hurts.

King Sark’s soul when he sees what they are doing with the genre he made more popular and acceptable in our culture.

As a woman, Eno Barony has to put more effort into her craft and stage performances, as a male rapper would be allowed to come on stage high, shirtless, and lip-synching whilst she has to have a whole concept for her stage performances to be considered alright.

As a male rapper, she would get away with not showing up for performances with petty excuses but woe betides her even if she misses the smallest of events because the question is how often she even gets gigs.

As a male rapper, she won’t have to be dropping links everywhere because just her gender will make her (in this case him) good at rap until proven otherwise. Then again I am glad she is female because she has this hunger to prove that she can run circles around your favorite male rapper. It gives her the ginger to keep releasing her very best and leaving no room for mistakes.

She’s destroying stereotypes about female rappers as well as leaving her mark in a male-dominated industry. Maybe being a man would have made her journey less inspiring and relatively easier. It may have made her journey more successful or even a failure.

I guess we will never know but at least we can spread the gospel of her musical genius by streaming her music on all streaming platforms, trust me she slaps like a wicked stepmom.
