The non-payment of GH77,006 in mortuary fees that were embezzled by a mortuary attendant at the Effia Nkwanta Government Hospital in the Western Region has been condemned by the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.

The funds were stolen between June 2019 and July 2020 by Stephen Kwabena Bartels.

The accused health officer, who has been relocated to a different hospital within the region, allegedly promised a payment schedule to pay off the debt but hasn’t made a single payment since 2020, according to the Ghana Health Service.

The money represents revenue for the 554 corpses that were placed in the morgue of the Regional Hospital during that time.
