Wassa East District: Minister Laments Chieftaincy Disputes And Their Impact On Development
Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah has complained about the several chieftaincy disputes in the region, saying it is impeding development in the region.
” One other area, I believe worries us here is the issue of chieftains disputes. I know that is a big challenge. But I believe that the truth is one. There seem to be so many interferences of new definitions for the installation of chiefs that is becoming too much of a problem.”
He believes that until people people become truthful and accept the traditional system of succession as outlined by customs and traditions, chieftaincy issues would still persist.
Speaking at Daboase during a tour of the Wassa East District, Mr. Darko Mensah, notes that the queen mother holds the mandate to nominate a candidate to be installed as a chief and presents same to the kingmaker who either accepts or rejects the candidates.
He said, bypassing the age-old traditions has resulted in a number of chieftaincy disputes in the region.
He called on the people to be truthful and follow tradition in the interest of development.
He indicates that the Akan values of selecting a rightful heir to ascend a throne cannot be downplayed, and also called on traditional authorities to abide by the truth.
“I think there’s something that we need as people in this district, take a firm decision on this matter, the truth is one. If you don’t like the queen mother’s choice tell her. I want to beg all traditional authorities here to allow the truth to stand.” He added.
