DEFECTIVE TRAFFIC LIGHTS A RESULT OF CABLE THEFT – STMA MCE

The Metropolitan Chief Executive for the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly Abdul Mumin Issah has attributed the malfunctioning of some of the Traffic Lights in the metropolis to Cable theft.

In most areas of the city of Takoradi, malfunctioning traffic lights are becoming a typical occurrence. Fact-based reseach shows that the longer these traffic lights continue to be ineffective, the greater the risk to drivers and pedestrians.

Speaking exclusively to Beach Newsroom at the 3rd ordinary meeting of the 3rd session of the 8th assembly of the Sekondi Takoradi metropolitan Assembly held at the Assembly’s chamber, Mr Abdul Mumin issah disclosed that the assembly is working in hand with the Urban Roads Department, which is responsible for determining whether or not traffic lights are working, to fix them.

“Some of these challenges is mainly due to cable theft. We have our brothers and sisters who are into stealing of cables and therefore they take advantage of probably absence of people around certain times to cut these cables”, Mr Abdul Mumin issah said.

He further expressed his concerns about the rise in the cable theft and affirmed to the fact the cables are relatively expensive.

Mr Abdul Mumin issah also attributed malfunctioning streetlights to cable theft and stated that predominantly takes days to realize and assess the damage that has been done in reference to the cut cable.

He clarified that in working towards fixing all traffic light, progress has been made such that as of now, many traffic lights in the region are functioning well with the exception of only a few with which he assured the public that the malfunctioning traffic lights will be fixed to ensure that our roads are safe and accident free, given that the areas where the traffic light cables were stolen have been identified.
