As part of implementing the Twin -Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project (TCSPP) in the Metropolis, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has launched a Climate Change Education Campaign at Ahanta Mampong Basic School.

The activity forms part of the Urban Climate Change Resilience Cluster of the project.

Head of Administration at STMA, Michael Adjei delivering a speech on behalf of the MCE said, the TCSPP aims at capacity enhancement to improve urban management, strengthen the twining relations between the Municipality of Palermo in Italy and Sekondi-Takoradi following the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

Climate Change

Mr Adjei mentioned human activities as the major driver of climate change due to the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

” Fossil fuels are by far the largest contributor to global climate change, accounting for over 75 per cent greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90 per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions,”

He further stated that energy, industry, agriculture, transport, land use and others are the main emitters in Africa.

Climate Change

On the issue of deforestation, Mr Adjei reckoned how the practice has contributed to climate change by depleting the natural environment and wildlife.

“For many years, ladies and gentlemen, the number of trees on the planet has been fell resulting in consequences such as biodiversity loss, soil erosion, species destruction, global warming and interference with the water cycle,”

Touching on illegal artisanal mining, he observed, has negatively impacted the environment resulting in land degradation and water pollution.

Climate Change

Mr Adjei entreated the public to stop the improper disposal of waste, indiscriminate cutting down of trees and care for the fruit tree plants, manage resources amongst other factors.

He however called on community leaders to champion the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 in realizing the vision of the Assembly to create a world-class city with modern infrastructure, social services, best governance and attracted living environment .
