Teacher Unions Remain Adamant To Go Back To Work After First Meeting With Government

The meeting between the striking teacher unions and government officials ended inconclusively. The two parties met to dialogue on the union’s demand for a 20 per cent COLA.

The situation has prompted them to declare a nationwide strike.

Deputy Secretary-General of Trade Union Congress ( TUC), Joshua Ansah told journalists that nothing can compel them to call off the strike if the demand is not met.

“We are requesting for the Condition of Living Allowance (COLA) to cushion us. As for the strike, they can’t stop us from going on strike. The strike will continue if there is no positive response,” He said.

The Deputy Minister for Labour Relations, Bright Wereko Brobbey pleaded with the striking unions to go back to the classroom whilst their concerns are being addressed.

” We recognise the fact that they have legitimate concern but the timing is not good, therefore we have heard them and they should go back to the classrooms whilst we continue to look at our books and see what we can do for them.

They have gladly also agreed to do more consultation with their members and cme back to us,” Minister stated.
