Traders’ Lament Over Low Patronage As Cost of Living Soars

Traders

Traders stationed at the Takoradi Jubilee Park are lamenting over the low patronage of their wares as a result of the high cost of living.

In an interview with Beach Newsroom, some traders expressed disappointment at the recent inflation in the prices of goods and services.

They revealed that rice, spices. fish amongst other commodities have skyrocketed leading to low patronage on the side of buyers.

” We can’t complain, we are just adjusting to the situation a bag of onion now sells at One Thousand Two Ghana cedis, initially it was Three Hundred and Fifty Ghana Cedis, the prices just shoots up and it cuts across all commodities from rice to tomatoes everything, but you have no choice but to purchase because you’ll have to eat, rice is one commodity that most mothers cook to feed their household but now buying it at a high cost has become a burden.”

“Even in the villages things are sold at a high cost ,the firms are not patronizing any longer and most of the produce rot away”

Statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) indicate year-on-year inflation for September 2022

based on the 16 administrative regions was 37.2 per cent.

On a year -on year basis, food inflation recorded a 2.2 per cent lower than non-food, which is 1.7 per cent leading to a 0.5 percentage point difference.

This means that in September 2022, the general price level was 37.2 per cent higher than in September 2021.

To some of the traders, the blame shouldn’t be laid on the government but on Ghanaian traders who want to make more profit from their trade.

“Hikes in prices shouldn’t be blamed on the govt, it the citizens who decide to shoot up prices as and when they feel like it, so we should blame ourselves”
