The Municipal Director of the National Disaster And Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA), Henry Kwofie, is entreating constituents within the Municipality to employ certified electricians to undertake electrical works in their homes and workplaces.
He made this call as the World marks International Day for Disaster Reduction today, October 13.
The day is observed under the theme; “Creating awareness about early warning systems”, to promote a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction.
Mr Kwofie, speaking to Spice FM on the importance of the day, urged households to ensure frequently change their electrical wiring systems as well as pay attention to gas leakages which emanate from gas cylinders to reduce domestic disasters.
“Sometimes, our household gadgets expose us to risks.
In most cases, you easily notice and change before it gets worse or critical.
We need to pay attention to things like gas cylinders, and extension boards by periodically checking them.
All electrical installations need to be changed every 10 to 15 years, and this must be done by certified electricians from the Energy Commission.
There have been 3 fire outbreaks in Effiakuma, which are a result of faulty electrical works.
We can prevent these and more by heeding instructions and advice from experts to reduce risk,” Mr Kwofie stated.
Again, Mr Kwofie hinted at plans of the Assembly to demolish structures built on waterways leading to floods whenever rain sets in, adding that it will construct storm drains and drains in Effia, Kwesiministim and other flood-prone areas to minimise flooding situations.
“Some people have been building without permits and they claim that EKMA is keeping their permits. We will eventually demolish all those illegal structures.
The leadership of the Assembly has decided to channel monies into constructing storm drains and drains to minimise flooding situations within communities found in the Assembly,” He added.
