W/R: Food Vendors To Obtain Permit Before Operating – FDA

Food Vendors in the region will soon be required to obtain a valid license before operating.

According to the Regional Director of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Martin Kusi, prospective food vendors are to meet a checklist before a permit is issued for operations.

He explained that the checklist comprises a health screening certificate, Veronica bucket, dishwasher and access to potable water amongst others.

According to him, the permit is only 5 cedis which is bound to be renewed yearly, adding that the permit is mandatory to ensure the safety of the vendor and the consumer.

“Before one acquires the permit there’s a checklist that one has to go through. For instance, one has to have a health screening certificate, Veronica bucket, dishwasher. After all these have been checked then you are issued with the permit which is renewable every year at a fee of 5 cedis,” He stated.

The Northern Regional Director for the Food and Drug Authority (FDA), Martin Kusi, has advised manufacturers to be mindful of defective labelling to avoid disqualification of their products.

Mr Kusi says the impending activities are to get food vendors the right education on the role they play in public health and sanitation.

He advised food vendors to embrace the exercise.

“This is a new project, we have started so we want educate the general public to understand, so that when we begin the enrolment it wont be a new thing to them.

We encourage all food vendors to buy into this idea,” He added.

The exercise is in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Health of the Authority and the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.
