Residents Of Sekondi Disappointed Over Comments By MP

Some residents of Sekondi expressed disappointment in their Member of Parliament Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer after claiming that he does not have the capabilities to address all of the issues present there.

Speaking on Takoradi-based Connect FM, Lawyer Andrew Agyapa Mercer said, even if he spends a century in office, He will not be able to tackle all the problems of Sekondi.

” I have not been under any illusion that I will be able to solve all problems in Sekondi even if I spend one hundred years as MP. This is because some of the problems are historical, others are present and many are evolving so at every point in time, there will be problems that need to be solved. God even has problems in this world and we always go to Him pleading for our problems to be solved. As a Member of Parliament, I have no problems with people expecting me to develop my constituency. If that is whether that in itself within our constitutional construct is the role of the MP or not, that’s the expectation of the people because people believe I have been voted for. But in law and fact, the Metropolitan Assembly is solely responsible for the direct day-to-day development of the constituency,” he indicated.

He claims that some of the issues in the constituency are old, others are current, and some are still developing.

Meanwhile speaking to Beach News these residents disclosed that every elected leader owns the responsibility to develop their constituency, and thus the comments of the MP comes out offensive and insulting.

” Clearly, no one can solve all issues subsequently but at least within the time frame you are in power, you should be able to do your best to solve what you can.”

” You campaigned and canvased for votes when you clearly knew you can’t solve the problem at hand and the work it requires. That’s a very childish comment from an MP “

“His comments are quite unfortunate. He should have just kept it to himself and pursued the works he could have tackled in the constituency. But to come out and speak like this, would you come back for votes in the subsequent elections?”
