GWCL To Seize Production Over Galamsey Activities

The Ghana Water Company Limited,(GWCL) says the activities of illegal mining in the Western Region is making the production of water tough each passing day.

According to GWCL, the region was using 20 gallons of Alums to treat water in the region but it has in recent times shot up to 60 gallons of alums, because of the poor nature of water bodies as a result of galamsey activities.

In an interview with the Western and Central Regional Communications Manager, for GWCL, Nana Yaw Barnie says, the situation is getting worse.

Adding that the government is losing the fight against galamsey in the region and called for urgent steps to be taken to salvage the situation.

For him, if the operations of illegal mining had stopped the water bodies should be clear but that is not the case in the region.

He stated that galamseyers are operating close to GWCL’s operation point at Daboase but when the ban on galamsey was announced, they moved away.

However, Mr Banie claims their analysis shows that the galamsey activities are still ongoing despite a national crusade to fight the menace.
