Sachet Water Consumers Lament Over Price Increase

Consumers of Sachet water in Sekondi- Takoradi Metropolis are complaining about the ¢30p to ¢50p increase in the product’s price.

According to them, the economic crisis is already having a burden on them due to the inflation of the cedi.

They cannot afford to buy water at the said price especially for school going children due to the increased costs, as this will result in less consumption of sachet water.

This is after the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) yesterday announced another upward increment in the prices of sachet and bottled water effective Monday, September 19.

According to the Association, a bag of sachet water, 500ml by 30pcs, is to be sold at GH¢7 maximum from the retail trucks. Mini shops, however, will retail the commodity at GH¢ 9 per bag maximum.

Raw materials such as plastic film roll and packaging bags for sachet water and high fuel prices are some of the reasons given by sachet water producers for the increase in prices of the commodity.

“I don’t think water should be an expensive commodity in the country because water is life. Imagine walking under the scorching sun and you don’t not have 50p to buy a sachet of water, that means you can’t drink water.”

“This increment will affect the mothers because we have to increase the feeding fee for our kids. They then have to limit the intake of water as I can’t afford giving them extra GH¢1 or GH¢2”

“School children are my major concern considering their intake of water. Parents have to increase their feeding money when the economy is already having a burden on them. We plead with them to sell it for 30p for the kids but can increase the price for adults.”
