An Economist at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Godfred Bokpin is backing calls for national dialogue to bring the economy back on track.
Speaking to the media, Professor Bokpin says, government must do this as soon as possible so as to feed into its revision of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programmes.
He says, there is the need for consensus building to bring in board alternative ideas from civil society, academia amongst others to find solutions to the ailing economy.
He noted that the structure of the economy will not be transformed by an IMF programme.
He was reacting to calls from Ghanaians including former President Mahama for a national dialogue to find a solution to challenges confronting the economy.
“The nature and magnitude of the crises demand some consensus building and bringing on board alternative ideas on the table reaching out to other political parties, and civil societies including academics, think tanks, and labour unions across different occupational growth.
The reality is that getting out of this situation requires everyone on board. It will not take the government or the Executive to bring this to fruition.
We need something beyond an IMF programme because we have said that an IMF programme is not a long-term solution to Ghana’s problem,” He stated.
