Pensioners Threaten Protest Over Unfair Treatment

Retirees are threatening to embark on a protest to register their displeasure over unfair treatment concerning payment of pension benefits.

A retiree who narrated his ordeal to the media blamed Trade Union Congress (TUC) for not doing enough to pursue the government to give pensioners what is due them.

He, however, hinted at plans for all retirees to go nude in protest against the unfair handling of pensions payment.

“We receive meager monies as pension and when we inquire, they do not give us any concrete explanation. We were short changed to the extent that we cannot collect even half of that amount. We are getting ready after July if we don’t hear anything we will naked ourselves and be in the street for the international community to see the type of government we have, ” He said.

In response, Deputy General Secretary of the TUC, Joshua Ansah blamed government for not implementing the new pension reforms which should have taken effect from 2020.

Mr Ansah said government has continuously relented on its promises to retirees making them feel short-changed.

” The ACT 766 which is the new act which was implemented in 2010, something we workers agitated for thinking that was coming to enhance pensions for retirees. But what we realize is that those who retired in 2019/ 2020 received something lower than those who received their benefit from the 247. Our research showed that some people were shortchanged and this appeal was made to the President ,” Mr Ansah noted.
