Afcon 2023 to take place in January/February 2024 – CAF

Africa Cup of Nations

The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will take place in January/February 2024 from June/July next year because of the heavy rains in Ivory Coast during this period.

This decision was made today by the CAF Executive Committee that met in Rabat, Morocco.

The Confederation of African Football originally slated the biennial continental showpiece for June/July 2023 but after months of deliberations and assessments by the LOC and CAF’s technical team, the dates have been changed to January/February 2024.

Weather conditions in West and Central Africa during the June/July period are mostly wet and comes with a large volumes of rain. Its only reasonable that the event has been postponed to avoid games being played rained off, postponed or played with few spectators due to downpours.

Qualifications for the tournament has already entered day 2 and it remains to be seen if some of the matchdays will be postponed to allow for some breather in the already congested schedules.
