Fishmongers in the Sekondi – Takoradi Confirm Increase in Prices of Fish

Fishmongers at the Takoradi market have confirmed an increase in the prices of fish due to the price increment of fuel and transport fares.

The fishing sector which supports the livelihoods of 3 million Ghanaians along the fisheries and aquaculture value chain has been the hardest hits since the increment in fuel prices.

Speaking to business daily, a kilo which was initially GH¢ 360 now is sold at GH¢ 490 and has compelled them to buy imported fish from another country at the cold store which is indirectly affecting the price of the fish.

“The fuel price is very high and making things hard. Due to the increase in taxes most of the cold stores have being closed. Prices of items have been multiplied by three.

Price of fish of fish has increased from GH¢12 to GH¢ 20 which is really killing and making us cry. We use to buy a kilo for GH¢ 360 but it’s now GH¢ 490 left with 10 to sum up to GH¢ 500.

When the price was GH¢ 360 we sell one GH¢ 12 but since it’s GH¢ 490 we sell it for GH¢ 20. Just recently price of oil has increased to GH¢ 530. I learnt that fuel price will be increased again. We are really suffering, specially paying school fees.

Of late prices have always been increasing in the space of three days. We use to buy it at 470gh but it’s now 500. We do not get the type of fish we sell in the sea in Takoradi do we buy from the foreign country like France.

So the tax of importation is affecting us. Though there are fishes at the cold stores prices have increased making fish experience so buyers do not purchase.”
