ECG Attributes Recent Power Outages To Pilfering of Copper and Aluminum
The Western Regional Communication Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Ben Quarcoe has reiterated that power outages in some parts of the region come about as a result of actions by unscrupulous persons who tamper with the Company’s System.
Mr Quarcoe in an interview with Beach FM attributed the circumstances to the stealing of copper and aluminium by some scrap dealers who tamper with their transformers.
“People have been tampering with our transformers, the copper and aluminium gets stolen stopping flow of power to our customers,” he disclosed.
He noted that the Company has been receiving complaints on incessant power outages in some parts of Metropolis for some time.
Residents in the Sekondi – Takoradi Metropolis have been experiencing power blackout without prior information from ECG. Some people have questioned whether ‘dumsor’ is back or not.
Responding to this question, Mr Ouarcoe reiterated that there is no ‘dumsor’ but some malpractices carried out by some scrap dealers who meddle with lines connected to transformers lead to blackouts in some areas of the Metropolis.
He also linked the situation to people who tamper with lines and conductors connected to transformers which convey electricity to the homes of consumers.
Mr Quaicoe said, the Company is liaising with security agencies to ensure such practices come to a halt.
“This is a security issue and we hope to liaise with security agencies to find a lasting solution to that,” he added.
He called on the general public to report any suspicious act to the company.
