GWCL to Construct 22 Million Water Treatment Plant to Forestall Incessant Water Shortages

The Western Regional Public Relations Officer, (PRO) of the Ghana Water Company Limited, (GWCL), Nana Yaw Bannie has said that plans are underway with the construction of a 22 million capacity water treatment plant at theDaboase to solve the perennial water shortages in the Western Region.

Nana Yaw Bannie in an interview with Spice 91.9 FM stated the water treatment plant is on course as project team came to inspect the site on which the project would be constructed.

 “The project team were on site about three weeks to do social assessment; to know those who would be affected, test the salinity level of the water among other things to ascertain where structures would be erected. The project is right on course,” he said.

He indicated that as part of the project, a dam would be constructed to help in extracting water for treatment and distribution into homes of customers.

“The current water treatment plant do not have a dam attached to it hence difficulty in drawing water to serve our customers. The new water treatment plant would come with a dam constructed with it where, we would be able to have enough water in store to distribute to consumers,” he mentioned.

Nana Yaw Bannie expressed worry over the activities of galamsey which requires deteriorated water to undergo treatment using lots of chemicals to get clean water for consumption.

According to him, the project is expected to be completed in the next three years on two phases running concurrently, adding that the project would exceed the demand for water by resident of Sekondi – Takoradi.

He said, “phase one of the project would produce 2.2 million gallons of water, whilst the phase two would produce same amount of water. Hence, 44. 4 million gallons of water would be produced a day to mitigate the shortage of water in the region”.

He was however quick to add that the rationing of water could go on for years until the project is completed.

He assured the people of the Western Region to cooperate with the Service to serve them in the distribution of water.

On October 20, 2020, Parliament approved two separate loans of over 81 Million Euros to finance the Sekondi – Takoradi Wtaer Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project.

The loans are Oeke – Backed agreement amounting to € 70 733432 and commercial loan amounting to € 10 500 000 between Ghana represented by the Ministry of Finance and Commerzbank Aktiengesellschaft.
