DCEs With bad Records on “Galamsey” Should not be re-appointed- Friends of the Nation

The Western Regional Programs Coordinator of Friends of the Nation, Mr. Solomon Kusi, has advised the President to reject District Chief Executives who have allowed activities of illegal miners to fertile in their jurisdiction. This is aimed to promote the fight against illegal mining at the local level.

The call comes on the back of a recent National Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining by the president to develop appropriate policy options for the small scale mining subsector.

According to him, the president plans to sanitize the small scale mining sector in the country will yield the needed result when he also considers holding leaders at the local level accountable for their stewardship, “this is one of the best approaches towards the fighting against Galamsey”

He proposed that the president should reject all DCEs whose performances on Galamsey in their districts are not impressive; he spoke on Adzekye Mu Nsem on Spice 91.9 Fm

“Government must make sure that any DCE whose jurisdiction is notorious for illegal mining are not re-appointed. This will be the first approach in nipping the act in the bad”.

Activities of illegal miners popularly known in Ghana as Galamey took the center stage in the country after the president of Ghana put his presidency on the line to fight the menace during his first term, yet the fight against Galamsey has been a challenge. This has necessitated a renewed effort to fight the menace in his second term through a stakeholder holder consulative meeting.

Mr. Solomon Kusi has called on the government to include “The Fight against Galamsey” as part of their Key Performance Indicators for DCEs, Chiefs, and District Police Commanders.

 “Also we must start appraising DCEs Chiefs and District Police Commanders per their performance on illegal mining ’’

Friends of the Nation participated in the recent dialogue of stakeholders of the small-scale mining sector. The dialogue also resolved to repeat similar consultation in all mining Regions and Districts of the country.
